I grew up in an area where gardens and yards were pretty common but farms, that took a bit of a drive to get to. And while I am sure agriculture was mentioned in my school, it would have been passing mentions in history, science, etc. We certainly didn’t have a “dirt to shirt” program about cotton in high school but some students in Texas have that.
Having a sister who was a primo teacher (nationally certified even!) and a colleague who has created great ag science education projects for our employer, I know teachers have a pile of challenges to getting really interesting, unique study programs accepted. So I love thinking that someone organized this program, putting in the time to build something that could give students a look at the lifecycle of cotton. And the fact that this is done in a totally different Memphis…. well it seems poetic that this Memphis, TN girl would be so jealous!
See, learning about cotton means you can learn a full range of sciences, business, math, fashion, finance, and more. Students are also able to get a clear idea of the work involved to grow food and fiber. That is awesome!
